Diving into the opportunity to learn more about South Africa’s most precious resource, water, Primary school learners from the five MRP Foundation supported Schools in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal, created artwork inspired by World Water Day (March 22).

Learners immersed themselves in the global day for water conservation, initiated by the United Nations, by creating eye-catching art pieces created from waste material for a creative arts competition. The World Water Day art competition prompted learners to explore the water crisis creatively with a special interest in this year’s theme, ‘why wastewater?’

Environmental learning, guided by WESSA (the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa), as well as the creative arts, forms a core part of the MRP Foundation Schools holistic education model. With a belief that every young person should have the opportunity to reach their full potential the schools programme develops learners through a range of school activities including quality education, technology-based learning and physical education and arts and culture programmes.

As South Africa is a water-scarce country it’s vital we not only realise the importance of water but we ALL commit to eliminating water wastage and encouraging others to do the same. You can conserve water by:

– Shortening your showers

– Planting an indigenous, drought-resistant garden

– Fixing leaking taps

– Placing a brick in your toilet cistern

– Saving electricity
